Parabola Vertex Calculator

Find the vertex (h, k) of a parabola given in standard form.

Concept Overview

The vertex of a parabola is its highest or lowest point (the "turning point"). For a parabola in standard form y = axΒ² + bx + c, the vertex is represented as the coordinate (h, k).

The x-coordinate (h)

The horizontal position of the vertex is found using the formula: h = -b / (2a). This value is also the Axis of Symmetry.

The y-coordinate (k)

To find the vertical position, plug the value of h back into the original equation: k = f(h).

Max vs Min

If a > 0, the parabola opens upward and the vertex is a Minimum. If a < 0, it opens downward and the vertex is a Maximum.
